    Gluten - Facts from Ayurveda There are numerous posts circulating regarding gluten and many experts are advising to avoid wheat in our diet. This is not entirely correct as an Ayurvedic physician I would like to clear the misunderstanding surrounding wheat. Wheat is called as गोधूम in Ayurveda and is an extremely important ingredient that we should rather must have in our diet. It has excellent properties which can act as medicine and food and such qualities that are rarely found in other foods and herbs. It is one of the few food substances that are recommended daily for a long time for human beings across all body types, races, ages, ethnicity or regions. This is not true for majority of the food substances as one which is good for some one may be it is not good for other person. Ayurveda always recommends to consider following parameters while deciding what a person should include in his diet देश i.e region which we are living, काल or the season and time of the day also the body conditions, वय age, *अग्नि* the digestive capacity of the body, सात्म्य the habituality of a particular type of diet or a substance, वृत्युपायान् i.e. type of work we do for our living, प्रकृति or the body type etc. Diet according to Ayurveda is a dynamic decision which we need to monitor periodically if not daily. Some portion of the diet may remain fixed and some portion needs to be changed as per some of the parameters mentioned above e.g diet of summer season cannot be same as that of rainy season like wise the diet of a kapha prakruti person cannot be same to that of vata prakruti person, or a diet recommended to a patient of diabetes cannot be same to that of a patient of Arthritis etc. This is a complex subject having many angles that should be considered and can be a subject of series of lectures or articles, coming back to wheat, a lot is being talked about gluten and its bad effects on health which is not entirely true. The gluten related problems are mainly due to inability to digest wheat rather than the properties of gluten. The way we digest various foods has tremendously changed in these years and also the way we manufacture or produce and process these substances alai has a different effect on properties of these substances. Most important aspect is our lifestyle and its effect on our digestion and handling of various foods. To conclude please don’t consider wheat as bad it is extremely useful and is a must eat substance. It has a property of being जीवनीय which means enhancing the life span of each cell in the body. Try to move around the place of work instead of sitting in one place or do some kind of physical work. This will help you to refresh yourself , especially when you feel dull & lethargic. 4. You have high physical endurance due to which you tend to exhaust yourself very very much. Try to avoid over exertion. 5. Do not allow your thoughts to get stagnated. 6. Always set your goals a little higher. 7. Try to respond as quickly as possible 8. Do not allow yourself to become lethargic & dull. 9. Avoid postponing of work. 10. Try to plan & complete the work before schedule. To maintain your heath you should: 1. Not delay or skip your meals, you should take meals at regular timings & in fixed quantities. 2. If you feel depressed, sluggish or lazy try a session of brisk walk or any kind of physical work. 3. Avoid damp, humid and cold weather, and environment. 4. You should protect yourself from dampness humidity and cold. Kapha being a cold and moist dosha, it gets aggravated due to cold, moist foods, damp weather & benefits from dryness, & heat. 5. Drink very little fluids to prevent clogging of body tissues with excessive water. 6. Avoid use of air conditioners. 7. Take care of yourself especially AFTER WINTER SEASON because ‘Kapha’ the dominant dosha in your Prakruti gets aggravated after winter season especially in march & april. 8. Stay warm; dry heat is beneficial for kapha prakruti persons. 9. Drink a glass of water with two teaspoons of honey every day early in the morning. 10. keep the passages of your body clean dry and warm.

Being nontolerant of injustice, false behaviour which may or may not concern you. 4. Getting angry very easily but also forgetting quickly. 5. You have a realistic and logical approach towards everything. 6. Your approach towards life is lively and full of vigour. 7. You are keen in observing rules & regulations strictly. 8. You have a natural liking towards perfumes, descent clothes and other luxuries. The drawbacks of your personality are: 1. You are too perfectionist and expect too much from your self and others, which often brings you disappointment and frustration. 2. This will prevent the pitta going out of balance & thereby minimise your irritation and anger. 2) Taking bath twice a day will help you to minimise the offensive odur of your body. 3) Try to communicate your feelings afterwards, instead of reacting immediately & sharply. 4) You have low physical endurance due to which you get exhausted very easily, it is essential to revive your energy periodically by way of rest and food to keep yourself healthy & efficient. 5) Wear ornaments prepared using pearls. 6) Use sober & faint coloured clothes and mild perfumes. 7) Do meditation in order to control your emotions especially anger. To maintain your heath you should: 1) Not delay or skip your meals, on the contrary you should take meals four times a day. 2) If you feel exhausted, irritated or unable to concentrate have a glass of milk or a piece of sweets. 3) Avoid sunshine, direct heat, hot weather, hot environment. 4) You should protect yourself from heat. Pitta being a hot dosha, it aggravates due to heat, hot foods, hot weather & benefits from coolness. 5) Drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration due to excessive perspiration . & to maintain the thermal setup of the body. 6) Use of air conditioners is recommended but keep them low and avoid immediate contact with outer environment to prevent sunstroke. 7) Take care of yourself especially AFTER RAINY SEASON because Pitta the dominant dosha in your Prakruti gets aggravated after rainy season in September & October 8) Apply cool compress to the eyes with eyelids closed, back portion of the neck, & lower portion of the feet. This will help to pacify the heat, relive the stress & revive the energy. But avoid doing this immediately after coming from sunshine. First you should allow the body to cool down and return to the normal temperature. 9) Control your feelings, keep your mind peaceful, calm and quiet. 10) keep the passages of your body clean and dry. Pitta prakrutiI persons should eat: 1) Cool, humid, nutritious, sweet & astringent foods. 2) Fresh hot meals, prepared using optimum quantity of oil. 3) Regular use of pure ghee in meals is recommended. 4) Puddings (khir) with dry fruits is recommended. 5) Sweets of different varieties taken in the meals in small quantities is helpful to balance the aggravated pitta dosha. 6) Pickles made of Amla are recommended. 7) Daily use of Amla Murabba along with pure ghee helps to control the tendency of pitta to go out of balance. 8) Cold milk blended with cardamom is an excellent refreshing drink for pitta prakruti persons. 9) A glass of milk with a teaspoon of pure ghee is a morning drink recommended for pitta prakruti persons. Avoid: 1) Dry, hot, spicy food substances. 2) Regular use of fermented foods like dhokla, Idli, dosa, bread etc. 3) Refrigerated, rewarmed, day old stale food, etc. 4) Chiwda, farsan, misal, Chinese food, pavbhaji etc. 5) Bhaji, vada, misal, chole, etc. 6) Foods containing preservatives, artificial flavours, colours etc. 7) Sauces, vinegar, pickles, chatani etc . 8) Non-vegetarian food . 9) Cheese, paneer, yogurt etc. 10) Excessive intake of salts & spices. 11) Alcoholic & other beverages. 12) Citrus fruits like oranges, mosumbi, lemon etc. Probable diseases: Pitta prakruti persons are likely to suffer from a number of diseases owing to th dominance of PITTA and its tendency to get imbalanced easily. The likely diseases are : 1) Hyper-acidity, Ulcers, Heart burn etc. 2) Allergies of all kinds. 3) Skin diseases, inflammations of different types etc. 4) Bleeding disorders, bleeding piles etc. 5) Hypertension and Ischaemic Heart diseases. 6) Anaemia (especially in females), Jaundice & other liver disorders. 7) Burning sensation in urine, eyes, palms, feet etc. 8) Excessive bleeding during menses. Prevention: To prevent the occurrence of above mentioned diseases and for the overall maintenance of the body, Ayurveda has suggested a therapeutic procedure called as ‘VIRECHANA’. This procedure which involvesMassage, steam bath and administration of PURGATIVE medicine, is extremely beneficial for persons with pitta dominant body constitution. It is recommended especially AFTER rainy season, in which there is natural & seasonal aggrevation of pitta. Caution: This advice is a general advice.     PCOS – The New Age Menace for young Girls PCOS is short form of Poly cystic Ovarian Syndrome is an entity found in mostly young girls and women.
